“This time I’ll come along and help,” he said. “I’ll stop you from doing anything too stupid.”

Ben thought this was awfully presumptuous, but as it turned out, they were going to need all the help they could get.

The witch had spotted them!

And instead of using more mist charms, she attacked Ben herself.

The next few moments were horribly confusing: Flummery swooped after the witch, aiming to knock her from the air with his wings; he carried the sengi on his back; she was lashing her tail and gnashing her teeth; Constance batted and clapped her hands as if she were chasing giant gnats; and the hippo joined the rumpus too — he stamped and opened his jaws in an alarming roar that startled them all yet did little else but add to the chaos. Meanwhile the witch continued to dart after Ben.

She whizzed so close that he felt the flick of the beetle’s wing on his cheek, so close that he glimpsed her eyes: they were purple, and he could see that they were full of fear. And as he ducked and swerved, it occurred to him that she might be as scared as he was. He knew that animals and humans are more dangerous when they are frightened. Might this hold true for witches?
